Lakewood Ranch was carved from the 48-square-mile Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, land the Uihlein family, owners of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company, have held since 1922. The first village, Summerfield, opened in 1995 on former cow pastures, and the community now spreads across more than 33,000 acres of east Manatee and Sarasota counties, with dozens of villages, a hospital, a medical school and its own Main Street. Most homes here are newer block-and-stucco builds with tile roofs, open floor plans and big air-handling systems. That matters after a fire: smoke follows the airflow, so soot and odor reach rooms far from the fire through the ducts. Getting the HVAC system shut down, sealed and cleaned is one of the first steps in a Lakewood Ranch fire restoration.
